Installing Windows 8 on a Mac Using Bootcamp: A Step-by-Step Guide
Note: Boot Camp is not supported on these devices: MacBook Air M1, 2020 / MacBook Pro 13', M1, 2020 / Mac mini M1, 2020 / iMac 24-inch, M1, 2021. Also, on Apple devices equipped with an M1 chip.
To verify the compatibility of your Mac with Windows 8, proceed as follows:
- Click the Apple icon in the menu bar.
- Choose About this Mac to review your device details.
Note: On PCs with an Intel chip, you will find Processor listed. On Apple devices, look for Chip.
Follow these steps:
Verify available macOS updates.
Note: Ensure all macOS updates are installed prior to setting up Windows.
- Access the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and select System Preferences.
- Click on Software Update.
- If your system is current, a notification will confirm that there are no new updates.
Note: The system will check for updates automatically. Allow a few moments for the search to conclude. If updates are found, click Update now and follow the instructions to download and install them.
Note: Should your Mac restart post-update, revisit Software Update to apply any remaining updates.
Prepare your Mac for Windows installation
The Boot Camp Assistant readies your Mac by creating a new partition named BOOTCAMP and downloading the necessary Boot Camp support software.
Note: If you’re using a portable Mac, ensure it is connected to a power source before proceeding.
- Insert your USB drive into the Mac and launch Boot Camp Assistant > Applications > Utilities.
- At the introduction screen, click Continue.
- Opt for all settings and click Continue.
- Select the downloaded Windows 8 .iso file and the USB drive to prepare the installation media.
- Adjust the needed space for the Windows partition by moving the centre bar and click Install.
- Following this, your Mac will restart to initiate the Windows 8 installation.

Setting up Boot Camp in Windows
Post-installation, the compatible Boot Camp drivers for your Mac will begin to install.
- In the Boot Camp installer on Windows, adhere to the on-screen directives.
- Upon completion, hit Finish.
- After your device reboots, comply with any prompts from other installation applications that might appear.
Note: Avoid pressing the Cancel button on any part of the installer.
Note: If prompted that the software has not cleared the Windows logo test, select Continue.
Note: Ignore the installer dialogue boxes that may appear briefly. However, if prompted to install device software, select Install. Check for any obscured windows if the installation halts.
Note: If the compatibility software does not start automatically, you may have to initiate it manually.
