How to Install Windows 8.1 on a Mac with Bootcamp?
Important: The following Mac models do not support Boot Camp: MacBook Air M1 (2020), MacBook Pro 13' M1 (2020), Mac mini M1 (2020), and iMac 24-inch M1 (2021). This includes all Apple devices with M1 chips.
To determine if Windows 8.1 can be installed on your Mac, follow these instructions:
- Click on the Apple icon in the top menu.
- Choose About This Mac to see your system details.
Note: On Intel-based Macs, you’ll see Processor. On Apple Silicon Macs, you’ll see Chip.
Proceed as follows:
Verify and Install Software Updates
Important: Ensure all macOS updates are installed before proceeding with Windows installation.
- Open the Apple menu located in the top-left corner and select System Preferences.
- Click on Software Update.
- If the system indicates no updates are available, you are up-to-date.
Note: The system will automatically check for updates. If any are available, click Update Now and follow the prompts to download and install them.
Note: After updating, if your Mac restarts, revisit Software Update to check for further updates.
Set Up Your Mac for Windows Installation
Boot Camp Assistant will prepare your Mac by creating a BOOTCAMP partition for Windows and downloading necessary support files.
Note: For portable Macs, ensure the device is plugged into a power source before continuing.
- Insert your USB drive and open Boot Camp Assistant from Applications > Utilities.
- On the initial screen, click Continue.
- Select all available options and click Continue.
- Choose the Windows 8.1 .iso file and the USB drive where you want to create the installation media.
- Adjust the size of the Windows partition by dragging the slider, then click Install.
- Your Mac will restart and start the Windows 8.1 installation process.
Note: The partition size is fixed and cannot be adjusted after installation.

Complete Boot Camp Installation on Windows
After Windows is installed, the Boot Camp drivers needed for your Mac will start installing.
- Follow the prompts in the Boot Camp installer on Windows.
- Upon completion, click Finish.
- After the restart, follow any additional installation instructions that may appear.
Note: Avoid clicking the Cancel button during the installation process.
Note: If prompted that the software hasn't passed the Windows logo test, select Continue.
Note: You don't need to interact with brief installer dialogue boxes. If a box asks for device software installation, click Install. If no action occurs, check behind other open windows for hidden prompts.
