Setting Up Windows 7 on Your Mac Using Boot Camp
Note: These Apple models no longer support Boot Camp: MacBook Air M1, 2020 / MacBook Pro 13', M1, 2020 / Mac mini M1, 2020 / iMac 24-inch, M1, 2021. This also includes any Apple devices equipped with an M1 chip.
To verify your system's compatibility with Windows 7, proceed as follows:
- Tap the Apple icon in the menu bar.
- Choose About this Mac to review your machine's specs.
Note: Intel-based PCs display Processor, whereas Apple-based systems show Chip.
Follow these steps to prepare:
Update your software first.
Note: Ensure all macOS updates are applied before setting up Windows.
- Log in with administrative privileges.
- Shut all active programs and log off other user sessions.
- Navigate to Apple Menu > System Preferences.
- Select General on the sidebar.
- Click Software Update on the right (you might need to scroll).
- Install any updates available for macOS.
Note: Should your Mac restart post-update, reopen Software Update to check for more updates.
Prepare your Mac for Windows
Boot Camp Assistant readies your Mac by setting up a new partition named BOOTCAMP and downloads the necessary Boot Camp support software.
Note: If you are using a portable Mac, connect it to power before you proceed.
- Plug your USB into the Mac and launch Boot Camp Assistant > Applications > Utilities.
- At the intro screen, click Continue.
- Opt for all listed options and press Continue.
- Choose the Windows 7 .iso file you've downloaded and the USB drive for the installation media.
- Adjust the desired space for the Windows partition by moving the center slider, then click Install.
- Your Mac will then reboot to start installing Windows 7.
Note: The partition size can't be modified later.

Setting up Boot Camp in Windows
Once Windows is installed, the installation of Boot Camp drivers that are compatible with your Mac will commence.
- In the Boot Camp installer on Windows, adhere to the prompts on your screen.
- Upon completing the installation, select Finish.
- After your device restarts, follow the prompts from any subsequent installation programs that might appear.
Note: Avoid hitting the Cancel button during any part of the installation.
Note: If a notification states the software being installed hasn't passed the Windows logo test, select Continue.
Note: It's not required to interact with the brief installer dialogues unless prompted to install device software—then choose Install. Check for any hidden windows if nothing appears to happen.
Note: If the compatibility software doesn’t automatically start, you may need to install it manually.
